THE WARD 8 THAT YOU DON'T HEAR ABOUT...

Real Estate Development

  • In the 1920s Anacostia was far more rural and boasted a higher percentage of home ownership than any other sections of the District.
  • Currently, Ward 8 has the most undeveloped land in the District of Columbia i.e., DC Village (over 100 acres), St. Elizabeth's Hospital (333 acres), Camp Simms (25 acres).
  • Ward 8 has two of the largest Hope VI projects in the city-Wheeler Creek and Henson Ridge
  • Census Tract 75.03 in Ward 8 has the lowest crime rate in the city.

Old Congress Heights School
Education
  • Constructed in the 1800s, the Old Congress Heights School and the Old Nickels School are two of the oldest schools in the District that remain historical landmarks.
  • In 2000, Ward 8's champions the Ballou Knights won the Eastern Division in football for the first time in 20 years.
Employment
  • In 2001, Ward 8 became the only ward in the city to house the CVS Pharmacy One Stop- the first public - private regional job training facility.
  • The University of the District of Columbia operates a satellite site in the ward that offers education and job training services for the community.

Community Events

  • Ward 8 has neighborhood and ward wide festivals and events such as the Martin Luther King Day Parade, the Ward 8 Health Festival, Congress Heights Day, Ferebee Hope Community Festival, etc.
  • Residents of Ward 8 and other organizations operate two farmers markets that provide fresh produce to the community.
Recreation
  • Ward 8 houses a state of the art Tennis and Learning Center, the only of its kind in the District
  • Ward 8 houses one of the new Senior Wellness Centers that provide wellness activities for seniors

Senior Wellness Center

  • Presently an 80,000 sq. ft arts and recreation center called the Arc is under construction and will house several organizations such as the Washington School of Ballet, the Washington Middle School for Girls, Covenant House of Washington and many others.
Arts/Museums
  • The newly renovated Anacostia Museum as well as the historic house of Frederick Douglass contain colorful historical artifacts about the struggles and triumphs of African-Americans
